Issue: Too Much?

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Airlines System Employees' Union (Maseu) has objected to the proposal to allow Malaysia's budget carrier AirAsia to operate from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (LTAAS) in Subang.

Describing the move as "a bit too much", its executive secretary Mustafar Maarof said the government had already spent RM250 million to build the low-cost
carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang. The proposal also run contrary to the government's plan to develop Subang as the country's aerospace hub, Maseu said in a letter dated Friday and addressed to Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. The copy of the letter was faxed over to Bernama.

Maseu was commenting on a report in the Utusan Malaysia daily yesterday quoting Azalina as saying that she supported the proposal for AirAsia to operate from LTAAS. Furthermore, Mustafar said several companies and agencies were already operating at the airport including the Syarikat Penerbangan Malaysia, Airod, Berjaya Air, Transmile Air, Civil Aviation Department, the air force and police air wing.

I find this situation rather funny because:

1. "RM250 million was spent to build the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang."

~I'm not sure if they realise if AirAsia was given the rights to fly from Subang, the govenment would save RM250 million. The people would save more on transportation (to the airport). It will also encourage people to travel more and concurrently boost tourism industry.

2. "Several companies and agencies were already operating at the airport including the Syarikat Penerbangan Malaysia, Airod, Berjaya Air, Transmile Air, Civil Aviation Department, the air force and police air wing".

~Subang airpot used to operate as the main gate to Malaysia. I don't think having only 7 companies/ agencies operating from there is already too crowded for the airport.

I think the main point is; other airlines would face tremendous loss if AirAsia operates from Subang. And that's why it's not going to happen.

Just to avoid them from suffering, government have to spend millions building a low-cost terminal, people have to pay more on transportation and waste time & energy on the road.

Now isn't that too much?

~Cheers!
